Time We Discuss: Become an International Author

Watch/Listen to this Episode Become an International Author Author, World Changer; Host of Time We Discuss is pointing to a picture of guest Machiel Hoek and giving the camera a thumbs-up. Background is a personal library.

Machiel's Writing Journey

Machiel detailed his unconventional path to authorship, emphasizing persistence despite numerous rejections from publishers. His first book took a decade to complete, and after struggling to secure a publisher, he self-financed an initial print run of 2,000 copies, distributing them locally during the COVID-19 lockdown. This grassroots approach garnered heartwarming community feedback and eventually led to a partnership with a smaller publisher. When expanding internationally, particularly to the U.S., Machiel faced additional hurdles. Undeterred, he distributed English-translated copies directly, even experimenting with unconventional methods such as handing books to homeless individuals to sell.

Cultural and Practical Challenges

Machiel highlighted cultural nuances in translating his book from Dutch to English, particularly adapting it for British and American audiences. He recounted differences in societal norms and expectations, such as interactions with homeless individuals and the portrayal of personal responsibility, reflecting broader contrasts between European and American cultures. He also touched on his educational background in economics and accounting, explaining how his training in structured thinking and concise reporting shaped his storytelling.

Burning Man and Inspiration

A transformative experience at Burning Man a decade ago influenced Machiel's book. He described a spiritual moment that inspired the creation of the central character, Lisa, and shaped his personal and creative journey. Returning to Burning Man after publishing his book in the U.S. symbolized a full-circle moment.

Themes of the Book

Machiel's book, *The Girl Who Changed the World*, explores themes of self-discovery, interconnectedness, and challenging societal divisions. Through the journey of a girl guided by her grandfather, the story emphasizes looking at life differently, finding common ground, and addressing fears. He believes the book's message is particularly relevant to addressing polarization and promoting unity.

Social Media and Self-Promotion

Despite initial hesitance toward self-promotion, Machiel acknowledged the importance of sharing his work to reach broader audiences. He reflected on the cultural differences in self-expression between Europe and the U.S. and his evolving relationship with social media.

Advocacy for Gender Balance

Machiel underscored the need for a more balanced integration of masculine and feminine energies in leadership and society. He argued for reevaluating traditional systems and rules to create sustainable harmony among diverse groups, advocating for equality beyond quotas and numbers.

Call to Action

Machiel concluded with a message about fostering collaboration and unity, urging societies to overcome polarization for a better future. His mission for the book is to inspire readers to embrace shared humanity and work together toward common goals.
