Time We Discuss: Trauma Coach, The Unexpected Healing Career
Watch/Listen to this Episode Trauma Coach, The Unexpected Healing Career
In this episode of TIme We Discuss, he hear from Penny who is a trauma career coach. She developed a unique program to assist individuals whose past trauma impacts their work life. Penny explains that her approach is not the conventional career coaching, which typically involves resume writing and interview preparation. Instead, she integrates trauma coaching to help people understand how their trauma affects their work and determine if they are on the right career path or if they should pursue something different.
Penny's journey began with her own experience of complex PTSD. WHile at a retreat in North Carolina, she realized the privilege she had in accessing health insurance and trauma-trained healthcare providers, unlike many others. This inspired her to create a program that could help people with trauma maintain their employment and, consequently, their health insurance, enabling them to heal and improve their lives.
She emphasizes the importance of addressing trauma in the workplace, noting that people with trauma are often seen as unreliable, leading to job loss and further difficulties. To combat this, she developed a ten-week Trauma Responsive Career Guidance program that covers various aspects of a person's purpose and wellness as they relate to work. This program can be tailored in length and focus based on individual needs.
Penny also discusses the collaborative aspect of her work, recommending that clients work alongside a therapist when possible. She serves as a bridge for those waiting for trauma-trained therapists, offering support and guidance in the interim.
Her services are priced affordably to make them accessible, especially for those in lower-paying jobs. Penny has also published her program in a book format, allowing people to undertake the trauma-responsive career guidance on their own, with the option to consult her as needed.
Additionally, Penny is expanding her offerings to include online classes that educate people about employer-provided coverages before they need them. This proactive approach aims to equip individuals with the knowledge to handle their claims independently, further supporting their journey through trauma and employment.
Penny's work as a trauma career coach is pioneering, combining trauma coaching with career guidance to help individuals understand and mitigate the impact of trauma on their professional lives. This ultimately fosters better health and job stability.
