Time We Discuss: How to Write Non-Fiction that People Actually Want to Read
Watch/Listen to this Episode How to Write Non-Fiction that People Actually Want to Read
In this episode of Time We Discuss, we hear from the founder of Story Builders, a company that helps people write and publish their books.
Bill Blankschaen begins by recounting his early career experiences. His first job was as a paperboy, which he finds ironic because it involved working with words—a theme that would become central in his life. He majored in English and history in college, following his passion for reading and writing, although he didn’t initially see it as a career path.
Bill transitioned into retail, working as a manager at Target. However, after two years, he realized retail was not fulfilling and began pastoring a small church. This role allowed him to work with words and messages, but it wasn’t until he helped found a Christian school that he felt he was getting closer to his true calling. At the school, he taught writing, history, and English, developed curriculum, and learned about leadership. Despite the school’s success, Bill felt a disconnect because he wasn’t writing as much as he wanted to. This realization led him to step away from his established identity as a school leader and pursue writing full-time, a decision that came with significant financial risk, especially with a family of six children.
Bill discusses the challenges and rewards of his writing career. His first book, A Story Worth Telling, was traditionally published and marked a turning point where he realized his passion and skill for writing could be a viable career. He later bought back the rights to this book and plans to release an updated version.
Bill emphasizes the importance of mindset, discipline, and curiosity in any career. He shares an anecdote about a college professor who pushed him to give his best, which helped him develop the perseverance needed in his later career. He also highlights the unique challenges of writing, particularly the need for clarity and the ability to communicate effectively without direct feedback from readers.
Story Builders, Bill’s current venture, helps people write and publish nonfiction books. The company offers various services, from ghostwriting and editing to helping authors navigate traditional publishing. Bill’s team also works on creating engaging learning experiences, such as digital courses and workshops, leveraging his background in education. He mentions that they have worked with notable clients, including John Maxwell and Kevin Harrington from Shark Tank.
In a reflective moment, Bill shares how one of the hardest decisions he made—leaving his role at the school—was also one of the most rewarding. Despite the financial uncertainty, it allowed him to align his outward identity with his inner passion for writing. He fondly recalls a Christmas during that challenging year when his family, despite having little money, created lasting memories with simple gifts.
Bill is offering listeners a free strategy session to discuss their book ideas, encouraging anyone interested in writing to explore the possibilities with Story Builders.
