Time We Discuss: Running a Nonprofit Organization

Watch/Listen to this Episode Running a Nonprofit Organization Horses on a farm, Time We Discuss Running a Nonprofit in a word bubble coming from the Time We Discuss logo.

This segment of Time We Discuss focuses on Lisa Wysocky, the founder of Colby's Army, a nonprofit organization situated on a 54-acre farm. Lisa, who has a background in journalism and public relations, explains the multifaceted activities of her organization, which include therapeutic horseback riding, organic gardening, and a homeless services program. She lives on the property, starting her day with farm chores like feeding horses and watering plants, followed by administrative tasks and volunteer coordination.

Colby's Army is named after her son, who passed away in 2009 from an opioid overdose. Colby's struggles with mental illness and homelessness inspired Lisa to start the organization, beginning with a homeless outreach program. This initiative started by distributing backpacks filled with essentials like water, protein bars, and toiletries. As the project grew, it necessitated the acquisition of a central location, leading them to the farm in Ashland City, just outside Nashville.

The therapeutic horseback riding program at Colby's Army is designed to teach life skills to individuals with various physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges. Participants range in age from five to eighty-three and face conditions like cerebral palsy, autism, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The program aims to help them achieve a better quality of life through structured activities.

Creating and managing Colby's Army involved forming a board of directors, a legal requirement for nonprofit status in Tennessee. Lisa opted for a small, selective board of five to seven members to avoid the infighting often seen in larger boards. She sought individuals who could contribute time, talents, or financial resources. The board's diverse expertise, including legal and marketing skills, ensures the nonprofit operates efficiently.

Lisa's educational background and previous careers played a crucial role in establishing the nonprofit. Her experience in public relations and as a therapeutic riding instructor provided valuable skills in grant management and program development. Despite the challenges of securing funding and resources in the early years, Lisa's dedication and the support of the community have been instrumental in the organization's growth.

In addition to her work with Colby's Army, Lisa is also an author and podcast host. Her mornings often include writing and interviews for her podcasts, Celebs with Horses and co-hosting Horses in the Morning. Her past careers and personal commitment to the nonprofit illustrate a blend of professional skills and personal passion driving the success of Colby's Army.
