Exploring Near-Death Experience Research with Bob Coppes: Time We Discuss

Watch/Listen to this Episode Exploring Near-Death Experience Research with Bob Coppes YOU = NDE Researcher; Host of Time We Discuss has hand on chin and thinking. Patient in the background. Top corner is picture of guest Bob Coppes.

Near-death experiences (NDEs) are profound events that occur often during clinical death or life-threatening moments, but sometimes also during psychological crises, meditation, prayer and occasionally spontaneous. Common features include out-of-body experiences, tunnels of light, intense feelings of peace, and life reviews. Bob Coppes, a researcher from the Netherlands, has spent years studying these phenomena to uncover their deeper meaning and validity.

From Banking to Afterlife: Bob Coppes' Path

Initially trained in economics and employed in the banking sector, Bob Coppes was deeply moved by Raymond Moody's book Life After Life. It inspired him to begin writing books and researching NDEs, turning a personal curiosity into a meaningful sideline career.

Finding Near-Death Experiencers

Bob shares how many people keep their NDEs private due to fear of judgment. However, organizations like the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS) and NDERF help researchers and experiencers connect. Conferences and community forums are rich sources for firsthand stories.

Types of Veridical Observations in NDEs

Bob explains two kinds of veridical (verifiable) observations:

  • Earth-Based Observations: Patients describe specific medical events that occurred while they were unconscious.
  • Otherworldly Observations: Encounters with deceased relatives or spiritual beings who provide unknown but verifiable information.

Life Reviews and Spiritual Lessons

Many NDEs feature a life review, where individuals relive moments from their lives from multiple perspectives—including those they affected. There is no judgment, only understanding and growth. This recurring theme emphasizes love, compassion, and interconnectedness.

Distressing Near-Death Experiences

Not all NDEs are blissful. Bob describes distressing experiences where individuals encounter fear or darkness. Research suggests these may arise from personal or collective unconscious fears rather than a moral judgment of the person's life.

Are NDEs Like Astral Projection?

While some similarities exist, Bob focuses on clinical and spontaneous NDEs, not intentional out-of-body experiences like astral projection. He notes that NDEs are more consistent in structure and have deeper psychological and spiritual impact.

Making a Career from NDE Research

Bob treats NDE research as a passion project alongside his professional work. He encourages others to pursue interests that make them feel alive—even if it begins as a side hustle. Passion and curiosity can drive personal fulfillment and meaningful contribution.

Publishing NDE Research

Bob has published three books. His most recent, Impressions of Near-Death Experiences, is a quote-based compilation covering topics like love, light, life after death, and why we are here. It aims to give readers a broad, firsthand understanding of what experiencers go through.

Comparing NDEs Across Religions

Bob's research compares NDE accounts with major world religions. He concluded that the essences of religions (most notably love your neighbors) can be found in NDEs, but not that all essences of NDEs can be found in each of the religions. An example is that God is in each one of us. This is present in Hinduism, but not in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, where God is an independent entity outside of us.

Final Thoughts: Four Ingredients for Life

One young NDE survivor recounted a message from a divine figure: a recipe for life with four ingredients—Love, Be Loved, Just Be, and Experience Life. Bob believes this insight captures the essence of NDEs and their lessons for us all.
