Time We Discuss: Oyster Farming Like You've Never Seen Before!

Watch/Listen to this Episode Oyster Farming Like You've Never Seen Before! Yes to Oysters!; Host of Time We Discuss is pointing to a picture of guest Kimberly Ward and giving a thumbs-up. Background shows a row of oysters going front and center and extending into the horizon.

Kimberly Ward shares her unique journey as both an oyster farmer and a writer in this episode of Time We Discuss. Kimberly and her husband transitioned into oyster farming after returning from two years on a sailboat with their daughter. Upon returning, her husband desired a more nature-oriented lifestyle. They established Mattapoisett Oysters, a floating oyster farm in Massachusetts, where they raise oysters in cages suspended in the water. Each cage line is anchored and holds around 40 to 60 cages, where oysters feed on naturally occurring nutrients. Ward describes the maintenance and high effort involved in oyster farming, from cleaning and flipping cages to sorting oysters by size. They also process and deliver oysters for sale in compliance with regulations, making it a full-time job for her husband and a part-time job for herself.

Beyond farming, Ward is a self-published author. Her book, Crew of Three, is a memoir that recounts her family's sailing adventure through the Caribbean and emphasizes personal growth and bold decision-making. The writing process began with a memoir-writing course that motivated her to share her experiences. She discusses the self-publishing journey, including challenges in editing, cover design, and marketing, but notes the support from local institutions like the New Bedford Whaling Museum, where she launched her book with her family.

Ward reflects on courage as a crucial element for starting new ventures, whether in farming or writing. She encourages listeners to follow their aspirations, stressing that learning and courage can overcome barriers. She concludes with enthusiasm for sharing stories and a desire to inspire others to pursue their dreams.
