Time We Discuss: How to Become a Working Musician

Watch/Listen to this Episode How to Become a Working Musician Music Industry Challenges; Host of Time We Discuss is pointing to a picture of guests Isabelle and Corinna.

Musicians Isabelle and Corinna join us in this episode of Time We Discuss. We explore their experiences in the music industry, from their creative process to the challenges of managing both artistic and business aspects of their careers.

The conversation starts with a discussion about how the role of the artist has evolved. Isabelle and Corinna mention that in the past, musicians were supported by professionals for non-creative tasks, but today, they are expected to handle everything, from production to marketing. For live performances, the duo records and produces their own tracks, relying on professionals only for re-recording high-quality versions of their music.

Their music is deeply personal, and they describe the detailed process they follow in recording and editing. Corinna, in particular, talks about her hands-on approach to producing music, even manually adjusting notes in non-MIDI software, reflecting her commitment to perfection.

The artists reflect on their songwriting journey, which started when they were children. They began by adapting English songs into German lyrics and now focus on writing their own music. Corinna explains how she has grown more conscious of the power of words, noting that she avoids using words like "fear" in her lyrics, preferring instead to convey messages of support and positivity. Both musicians now prioritize creating uplifting content, distancing themselves from darker themes, which they feel are already abundant in popular music.

Despite their emphasis on positivity, the sisters acknowledge that their music also reflects the complexities of life. Corinna shares a personal story about a period of depression that inspired her to write a song titled "Coming Closer." This song highlights the paradox that difficult experiences often lead to powerful artistic expression.

Regarding their musical education, the twins explain that although they took a few singing lessons, their musical abilities are largely self-taught. Growing up in a musically vibrant household contributed significantly to their skills. While they appreciate formal education, they believe that their lack of conventional training allows them to write in unconventional ways, giving their music a unique edge.

In the business aspect of their careers, Isabelle’s business background has been instrumental in managing tasks like video production, website maintenance, and other logistical needs. The conversation also touches on the importance of music videos in today's industry. Although they believe videos are not as crucial as they once were, the artists still find value in creating them for fans who want a deeper connection with their music.
