Magic and fantasy author, Jennifer Shaw, is featured in this episode of Time We Discuss. A self-published fantasy author, Jennifer discusses her writing journey, challenges, and successes. She has written three books, with a fourth set to release in early 2025. She explains why she opted for self-publishing over traditional publishing, despite receiving offers from publishers. The publishers wanted to split her books into smaller parts and make changes she was unwilling to accept. This desire to retain full creative control was a significant factor in her decision to self-publish.

Jennifer describes the steep learning curve she faced during the self-publishing process, including obtaining ISBN numbers, creating a website, and understanding marketing strategies. In Canada, she discovered that ISBN numbers are free, unlike in the U.S. She had to learn about various aspects of book production, such as formatting and designing covers. Since she is not very computer-savvy, Jennifer hired a professional to build her website and guide her in maintaining it.

Marketing proved to be another major challenge. Jennifer openly shares her struggle with autism and ADHD, which initially made social interactions and marketing intimidating. However, she learned to enjoy book signings by reframing them as opportunities to connect with readers rather than mere sales events. She emphasizes the importance of being approachable and engaging with visitors at her book-signing tables. Jennifer has participated in events at various bookstores, including Indigo and Chapters, as well as local markets and conventions.

A significant portion of the discussion focuses on the logistics of consignment sales. Jennifer explains that she distributes her books to stores on consignment, meaning she retains ownership of her books and must replenish stock herself. She orders printed copies through Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) service, which she finds user-friendly compared to other platforms like IngramSpark. She advises authors to purchase their own ISBN numbers rather than use those provided by Amazon, as Amazon-owned ISBNs limit the ability to distribute books outside its platform.

The conversation also covers hidden costs of self-publishing, such as hiring editors and cover designers. Jennifer emphasizes the importance of quality editing but warns against scams and subpar editors. She recounts her experiences with various editors, some of whom were unreliable. Ultimately, she found an editor she trusts, though she continues learning how to improve her writing.

Despite not having a formal writing or English education, Jennifer attributes her storytelling skills to years of practice and guidance from her mother, an English major. Her background in science and math did not hinder her ability to become a successful author. She believes that anyone can improve their writing through consistent effort and reading widely.

Jennifer's books blend elements of magic, fantasy, and adventure. The series is set in a world where a magical realm coexists with our own, separated by an invisible veil. The protagonist, Callum Walker, is a young man with magical abilities who struggles to find his place in both worlds. The upcoming fourth book continues Callum's journey as he seeks a way to mend the veil and encounters new challenges and enemies.

Jennifer concludes by inviting listeners to visit her website for updates, upcoming book releases, and event information. She expresses her willingness to assist aspiring authors by sharing her self-publishing knowledge and experiences.
