Time We Discuss: The Ultimate Guide to Becoming an Elementary School Principal

Watch/Listen to this Episode The Ultimate Guide to Becoming an Elementary School Principal Summers Off!; Host of Time We Discuss is looking deep in thought. To the side is a picture of guest Elementary School Principal, Leroy Slanzi.

In this segment of Time We Discuss, We speak with Leroy Slanzi, an elementary school principal known for his diverse background in education, including roles as a secondary and middle school principal, and as a special education teacher. The conversation explores his daily routine, unique approach to school administration, and his views on educational leadership and student well-being.

Leroy starts his day early, arriving at school about an hour before the first bell. His mornings are busy with teachers seeking guidance and support. As an elementary school principal, he sets up his workspace in a "calming space" rather than a traditional office. Leroy prefers this setup because it allows him to maintain close interactions with the students, which he finds crucial for their development and his understanding of their needs. Despite his informal workspace, Leroy maintains the necessary confidentiality for administrative tasks. He has a separate office for confidential files and phone calls, ensuring that privacy is never compromised. His day as an elementary school principal typically involves addressing behavioral issues, supporting teachers, and engaging with students, often through his calming space.

Leroy’s approach as an elementary school principal is grounded in the importance of social-emotional well-being. He runs a program called Play is the Way, which focuses on developing these skills in children. His decision to create the calming space stemmed from his desire to be more accessible to students and to provide a space where they can regulate their emotions through play and interaction. This method has significantly improved student behavior and engagement in his previous schools.

Leroy's leadership style as an elementary school principal is unconventional but effective. He emphasizes relational and servant leadership, advocating for leaders who prioritize emotional intelligence and strong interpersonal relationships. His workspace is designed to be a hub of interaction and support rather than a secluded office, highlighting his belief in being approachable and integrated into the school community.

Leroy describes his Mondays as particularly engaging. He holds a weekly assembly where students are recognized for positive behaviors and achievements. This assembly also includes drumming and singing, reflecting the school's indigenous culture. Leroy uses this time to discuss emotions and behaviors with the students, setting a positive tone for the week.

After the school day, Leroy continues to support teachers and address any outstanding issues. He also makes phone calls to parents, often after school hours to avoid interrupting their workday. Additionally, he ensures the safe transportation of students who use school buses, personally overseeing their departure to prevent any mishaps.

Leroy has written two books - Emotional Schools: The Looming Mental Health Crisis and a Pathway Through it, and a book for parents and teachers called And Breathe: 50 Fun Calming Strategies for Kids and Parents. His future goals as an elementary school principal include fostering stronger connections between families, schools, and communities, and promoting learning through attachment and connectivity.
