Dan @ Time We Discuss: So you want to start a business, but maybe you aren't quite sure what you want to do. Well, you're in luck. You can have any of these five in demand businesses ready to go by the fall. Fall's a fantastic time to start a business. As the summer winds down, people head back to routine, companies kick off their Q4 push, and holiday spending begins to ramp up quickly. So for businesses that have low startup costs and high profitability and competitiveness, the best approach is to focus on service-based or asset-like models. And here are five business ideas that perfectly fit that autumn transition.
First up, professional academic coaching and college prep. Now in episode 46, I spoke with Chris Loper, who's a tutor that does this exact thing. While standard tutoring happens year round, the fall is the absolute peak for high-stakes academic consulting. Parents and students are staring down college application deadlines, SAT and ACT test dates, and the immediate shock of advanced fall coursework. One of the reasons why this is great is because of the low cost. Your primary investment is your own knowledge, a reliable laptop, and video conferencing software if you operate virtually. chances are you already have an electronic device of some kind and video conferencing software, like Zoom, for instance, is free to start. This is also highly profitable. College admissions and specialized STEM coaching can make premium hourly rates, often ranging from $50 to $150 per hour depending on your expertise. And when it comes to the fall, families are highly motivated and budgets are unlocked right as the school year begins. So this is the prime time to start a professional academic coaching and college prep business.
So number two, commercial and residential holiday decorating. There has been a huge influx in this in my neighborhood over the past several years, and it seems it's only getting more and more popular. As soon as October hits the race for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and winter holiday decoration begins. Busy homeowners, corporate offices, and local storefronts will have spectacular displays, but simply don't have the time or physical capability to put them up. Now here's why it's a low cost. You can start by requiring clients to provide their own lights and decorations, meaning your upfront costs are limited to basic tools, ladders, extension cords, clips, and insurance. This is key, especially for someone that doesn't have the time to necessarily put up their own decorations, but they still want to have it done and they don't want to pay an arm and a leg. This is another highly profitable business because it's a premium convenience service. You can charge significant flat fees for installation and then double down by charging again in January to take everything down and store it. This especially has a fall edge. It has a built-in deadline. This creates an automatic sense of urgency for customers to book you quickly.
Number three, corporate gift and event concierge. With Q4 underway, businesses are scrambling to organize end-of-year corporate retreats, client appreciation events, and holiday gift baskets. Many HR and marketing departments are completely overwhelmed and outsource this entirely. It's a low cost because you act as the person in the middle. You don't need to hold inventory. You secure the client's budget upfront, purchase goods from wholesalers, or secure event venues, and bake your consulting management fee into the total cost. It's also highly profitable. Corporate budgets are generally much larger than consumer budgets. If you can deliver sleek professional execution, you can secure high margin contract fees. Much like the other two businesses, this one also has a fall edge. Companies are looking for immediate ways to spend remaining annual budgets before January, and this makes them highly receptive to professional services that save them time and ultimately money.
Next up, seasonal property maintenance and leaf removal. When the leaves start falling, homeowners and property managers face a relentless chore. Beyond just raking, fall maintenance includes gutter cleaning, winterizing gardens, and aeration and overseeding for lawns. This is another one that's a low cost. Unlike full-scale summer landscaping, which requires heavy expensive machinery, fall maintenance can be launched with a professional grade leaf blower, sturdy ladder, yard bags, and basic hand tools. Much like the others, this is also highly profitable. It's repetitive work. A single neighborhood can yield a dozen clients who need your services every two weeks for a couple of months. Much like the other businesses, this one has a fall edge as well. Gutter cleaning and leaf removal are non-negotiable tasks to prevent property damage. We experienced this first hand when we are in our house for the first year, and never again. Because of this, it makes it an easy sell to busy neighbors.
Finally, mobile pet grooming and muddy paw cleanup. As the weather turns wet cold and muddy, keeping dogs clean becomes a massive headache for pet owners. Standard grooming salons often have weeks-long waitlists in the fall and winter, creating a perfect gap for a nimble competitor. No surprises, another low cost here. Instead of buying a massive custom grooming van, you can start as a "house-call groomer" who utilizes the client's bathroom yard or focus strictly on essential low-equipment maintenance packages like baths, blowouts, nail trims, and paw care using portable gear. This is another one that's also highly profitable. The pet industry is incredibly resilient to economic downturns, and owners routinely pay premium prices for the convenience of not having to drag a messy dog to a salon in bad weather. Just like the other four, this has a fall edge as well. The weather creates the demand for you. Money trails and rainy autumn days mean pets get dirtier faster.
So there you have it, five profitable businesses that if you start to lay the groundwork now, you can be up and running very quickly by the fall. When it comes to these five jobs, Chris Loper is the only one that I spoke to that actually does one of them. So if you want me to find a professional that does any of those other four, let me know when I'll find that person for you. All right, well that'll do it. See you next time on Time We Discuss.
